Catawba Reservation Field Trip

Archived Events

In recognition of the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, we have been studying different topics related to their journey westward. Our latest topic of discussion was the interaction of Lewis and Clark with the Native Americans they met along the way. To gain a better understanding of the Native American culture, the middle school students spent a day at the Catawba Cultural Preservation Center on the Catawba Indian Reservation. While we were there we learned about the the history of the Catawba Nation and how to speak a few words in their native language. A master Catawba potter also demonstrated the technique used to create the nationally famous Catawba Pottery. Our visit ended with traditional dancing and drumming by members of the Catawba Nation dressed in traditional ceremonial clothing. They let us join in on the final farewell dance.
