Connections that Count

Service Learning

On March 5, the fifth graders presented an original story to the audience of Connections that Count, a bilingual program hosted at the Steele Creek branch of the Charlotte-Meck Public Library. On May 14, they returned to teach the children a Spanish song (with choreography), and participate in more singing and games. Connections that Count is a program for preschool students and their families. It began with a grant from the Knight Foundation to prepare children from bilingual or Spanish-speaking households for school.

The 5th graders made signs in Spanish to encourage Hispanic Americans living in the area to take advantage of free library cards. In addition to their artwork, they presented their host with book donations from students and parents of Woodlawn School. The program is planning an upcoming interview with the students to post in a newsletter that circulated in Charlotte's predominately Hispanic neighborhoods. We look forward to continuing this exciting on-going partnership with the program, its participants, and the library.

Thank you to all of those who donated children's books and other resources.
