5th and 7th graders traveled to Spirit Square in uptown Charlotte in September to hear Fra Fra Sound, a cutting-edge world music group that blends Caribbean jazz with R&B and soul to create a unique and mysterious global sound. After breaking for lunch they took a walking tour of some of Charlotte's public art.
Some student quotes:
"The music was great and it helped me learn more about different cultures."
"The music is a mix of cultures brought together through music."
"The band members encouraged us to travel, if not by plane, then through books."
"It really got my heart moving."
"...to welcome new things."
The purpose for public art:
"...to make people think about things on a daily basis and make the streets more interesting."
"Everyone has access to it without going to a museum."
When asked what special considerations an artist must consider when creating a piece of art for public spaces, the students responded:
"They want to know who visits the space."
"The artist must consider if it is appropriate for a public space."
"Many different people will see it so it can't be meant just for one."
"It must stay together through any weather."
