The Haven at Highland Creek

Service Learning

In late October, the second/third graders returned to The Haven to help celebrate the arrival of Autumn. With bright cheerful smiles, the students greeted the residents and persuaded them to make a fall craft for their rooms. Students helped the residents choose colorful leaves, acorns, prickly pine cones and nuts gathered from Woodlawn campus and arrange them on a door hanger. The completed "Happy Fall Y'all" door hangers were hung on each resident's door with love by the students.

In mid-December, our 2nd/3rd grade students arrived at The Haven with Christmas Carols in hand. For over an hour, students filled the halls of the residence with familiar Christmas Carols ranging from "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" to "The Little Drummer Boy." Residents joined in - singing, clapping and even humming with great excitement, and later requested some of their favorite carols. We are looking forward to returning to The Haven in January.

On Friday, January 23, we made valentine heart people and sang songs to the residents. One student described the activities:
"First the residents made valentine heart people. We showed them how to make the accordions which were the arms and the legs. Our class made three valentine men for the residents to put on the Haven's bulletin board. After we finished making the valentines. We sang "Pretend you're on the lake and in a boat!" The residents rowed the boat while they sang. Making valentines and singing at the Haven was absolutely wonderful!"

We also made three visits to the Haven during the 2002-03 school year.
