Helping Out the Humane Society

Service Learning

6th grade students followed up their October trip to the Charlotte Humane Society by delivering some donated items to the endangered birds at the Carolina Raptor Center, and gathering some background information for their next math portfolio project on animal overpopulation and extinction. Back on campus they were given the ingredients to make microwavable dog biscuits for their friends at the Humane Society. However, there was a slight twist - they were given a recipe in standard units, but had to use only metric measuring utensils (Mrs. Blackwell always finds a way to integrate those math concepts!). The dog biscuits were delivered to the Humane Society, along with donated items brought in by the students.

In December, the 6th graders turned photos of Humane Society animals into hand-made adopt-a-pet ornaments, and then gave the ornaments out at two local pet stores.

The 6th grade class expressed their love for felines in March by starting gift baskets for the Humane Society. In the first piece of the project, students used the pottery skills learned in art class to create treat bowls for the cats. Then the students worked on making toys to put into the bowls. Students sewed mice and then stuffed them with catnip. After the pottery project is completed, the items will be given to the Charlotte Humane Society cats and kittens.

In May, the 6th graders used some of their math skills to design and build (from scratch) a variety of pet furnishings for the Humane Society. The building projects ranged from cat scratching posts and kitty condos to dog beds complete with bone-shaped pillows.
