King's Mountain National Military Park

Archived Events

On Monday, November 24, the eighth graders and Mrs. Sherman drove to South Carolina, to visit King's Mountain National Military Park. King's Mountain was the site of one of the most significant battles of the American revolution. The battle took place on October 7, 1780, as a dispute between the Patriots and the British. The eighth graders watched a documentary video about the battle at the King's Mountain Visitors Center and Museum, before heading out on to the battlefield trail. They saw several monuments and headstones of Generals and Majors that died in the battle. There were government monuments on the trail as well.

They learned all they wanted to know about the battle at King's Mountain. Informational signs along the trail helped to teach them about each event and stage of the battle. They learned about each side of the fight, and the events leading up to the battle. The British side was commanded by Col. Patrick Ferguson, a courageous British officer. The Patriots were led by several generals, including Gen. Shelby and Gen. Sevier. The battle was a turning point in the revolution, and one that helped the Americans win the war. The field trip was interesting and educational, and added to the eighth graders' study of American History.
