Fifth Grade Math Portfolio Project | |
objectives | To learn a practical application of fractions and addition of fractions with common and uncommon denominators. To see the relationship between math and music. To investigate how Southern culture impacted the rise of jazz music. |
procedure |
Each student will complete the following steps (40 points). 1) Complete the "Rhythms Worksheet" to practice the concepts discussed in class about quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes. 2) In a paragraph, discuss the roots of jazz music and how it was connected to the Southern culture of the time. Research and compile a short biographical sketch of one of the following jazz musicians: Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Dizzie Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, or Billie Holiday. 3) Analyze at least 20 measures of a piece of jazz music for rhythms. It would be great if it was a song by the selected artist, but it is not required. Students should demonstrate how each measure adds up to the proper time signature. 4) Students will compose 12 measures of rhythm in the jazz style. Students should keep in mind the ideas of syncopation and the "Big Four" rhythm. Students must demonstrate, using addition, how each measure contains the appropriate number of beats. 5) Students will perform their rhythm piece for the class on a percussion instrument of choice.
