Carolina Raptor Center

Archived Events

Something fairly unusual happened at the Raptor Center on our visit in early November. After touring the grounds and taking in a variety of magnificent birds (red-tailed hawks, great horned owls, falcons, and barred owls), our 6th and 7th graders finally arrived at the huge eagle aviary. Sitting majestically on perches and in trees, 8 bald eagles and 2 golden eagles stared at us warily. Like most of the other birds at the center, they tended to stay toward the back of their enclosure, which in this case was at least 200 feet wide and 100 feet deep. Suddenly, however, one of the bald eagles hopped down from his perch and calmly walked to the very front of the aviary. He stood there for several minutes, literally one foot away from us. At this distance, even through the chain link fence, the eagle's fierce-looking demeanor and obvious power were awe-inspiring.
