Winners Recognized in School Academic Competitions

Archived Events

The Iredell County Non-Public School Spelling Bee was held at Woodlawn on January 14. The competition lasted for quite a few rounds, but in the end, Woodlawn champion Matt Sarett outlasted everyone. By doing so, he earned the right to proceed to the 64th annual Winston-Salem Journal Regional Bee held on March 21 (a contest which was won last year by Woodlawn's Sammy Sarett).

At the Regional Bee, Matt faced 38 other system bee winners from 25 counties in North Carolina and southwest Virginia. The 4-hour, 23-round marathon included such words as Byzantine, lepidopterology and imam. Matt certainly impressed his fellow competitors and the audience with his linguistic skills, finishing runner-up to sixth-grader Saryn Hooks from Taylorsville. Congratulations to Matt as well as to all of the participants.

Woodlawn's Geography Bee, held on January 16, challenged students in grades 5 through 7 on their knowledge of our world's political, cultural, and natural features. Two of the contestants, Elene Clemens and Eloise Andry (pictured at left), were perfect through the initial 7 rounds of the competition. They then squared off in the championship round, where each of them correctly answered 2 of the 3 questions. It took a couple more questions in the tiebreaker round before Elene was able to claim the victory. Elene then completed a written test which qualified her for the state competition in Raleigh, held on April 2. Each year, only 100 of the approximately 35,000 North Carolina participants advance to the state competition.
