On Sept. 3, 5th, 6th, and 7th graders got a chance to better understand the beginnings of Woodlawn as well as how people lived in the Carolinas during the early 19th century. George Mundle, who owned the Woodlawn plantation for 25 years and did quite a bit of research on its history, gave students a glimpse into pre-Civil War life. He took them on a tour of the historic home, built in 1836, as well as the immediate grounds. Students heard about Federal and Greek revival architecture, the invention of coat hangers, why kitchens were built separate from houses, and other interesting facts. They finished the day with a little square dancing - something that was frowned on by many people in the 1830s, but was allowed at Woodlawn.
