| Archived Events | In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Woodlawn families responded by donating backpacks for evacuees and by selling beads to benefit the American Red Cross relief effort. Students collected 50 backpacks for displaced students that were delivered to CMS schools. In cooperation with Summit Coffee, they sold beads (at $1.00 a piece) to raise more than $1000 for the relief effort. Below is a letter of thanks from Cindy Praeger of CMS:
Dear Generous and Kind Friends:
Thank you so much for supporting the children of Hurricane Katrina. We are delighted that you were able to provide so many backpacks. To date, we have delivered over 382 backpacks to students at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The students are thrilled with the backpacks and are happy to feel like all the rest of their classmates.
Thank you for helping to welcome these children to Charlotte and helping them to have a great day at school.
All the best,
Cindy
