This year's school Geography Bee was held on Dec. 14, and featured the 10 students that survived the preliminary rounds. The participants included:
5th grader John W.,
6th graders Iliana R. and Stephan S.,
7th grader Hailey S., and
8th graders Aidan B., Michael C., Paulina C., Matt B., Riley B., and Neal B.
After the first 5 rounds, all but two contestants, Aidan and Stephan, were eliminated. Those two finalists breezed through several more tough questions (involving Guam, gila monster habitats, and Asian landlocked countries), before Mrs. Denham had to resort to a sudden-death round. Several questions later, Aidan emerged as the winner when he correctly identified Maine as the state containing the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. This is Aidan's third school bee championship - he won Woodlawn's Bee as a 5th grader and as a 6th grader as well. If he qualifies for the state championship (as he did in both of those years), he will compete with 99 other bee winners in Raleigh on April 4.
