This past spring, Woodlawn submitted an entry into Apple Computer's nationwide iLife Educator Awards contest. Out of over 800 projects entered, Woodlawn was recognized with an Honorable Mention (top 10% of all entries) - the only school from North Carolina to be so honored. The contest was created to recognize the most innovative uses of iLife, an integrated suite of Apple's award-winning software for digital music, photography, moviemaking and DVD creation, in the classroom. Woodlawn's entry, The Principles of Art and Music, is an excellent example of our integrated curriculum and our use of technology across all disciplines.
|
During January, 2003, Woodlawn students participated in a month-long investigation into the principles of both art and music. The culmination of this study was a performance that included music of their own composition, played on hand-made instruments, and a display of original artwork that reflected a specific work of classical music.

PRINCIPLES OF ART
Balance: Concerned with arranging elements so no one part of a work overpowers, or seems heavier than, any other part.
Variety: Concerned with combining one or more elements to create interest by adding slight changes.
Harmony: Concerned with blending elements to create a more calm, restful appearance.
Emphasis: Making an element in a work stand out.
Proportion: Concerned with the relationships of one part to another and to the whole.
Movement: Used to create the look and feeling of action and to guide a viewer's eye throughout the work of art.
Rhythm: Concerned with repeating an element to make a work seem active or to suggest vibration.
Unity: The arrangement of elements and principles with media to create a feeling of completeness or wholeness.
PRINCIPLES OF MUSIC
Balance: maintaining a perceived uniformity throughout a work or
section of a work. No one voice or instrument too prominent. Can also
refer to a work's "symmetry" of arrangement.
Harmony: describes the sounding of two or more notes and the resulting
chords.
Emphasis: accentuating - usually by dynamics (the "loudness" or
"softness") - a section of a work.
Movement: a section of a larger work of music. Also describes the
"speed" of a series of notes in a melody or chord progression.
Rhythm: the arrangement of notes according to their relative duration.
