Sammy left for Washington, D.C. on May 24 to compete in the National Spelling Bee along with 250 other regional winners. She made it through to the second round on Wednesday, May 28. Congrats to Sammy on her achievements this year in these spelling bee competitions.
7th-grader Sammy Sarett represented Iredell County's non-public schools in the 63rd annual Winston-Salem Journal Regional Spelling Bee on March 23rd. There she competed against 36 other local winners for a chance to go to Washington, D.C. (all expenses paid!) for the National Spelling Bee in late May. During the first 10 rounds of the competition, she correctly spelled words such as "merino", "scabbard", "busby", "hagiographer", and "disembogue". With just two contestants remaining, she calmly spelled "choleric" (showing or expressing anger), and then proceeded to win the bee on the word "pleiad" (a group of seven illustrious persons).
It was evident during the bee that Sammy's wealth of competitive experience was paying off - in 2002, she won the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system-wide bee before being eliminated at the regional level. We are extremely proud of Sammy and of the way she represented Woodlawn School at the regional and national levels.
