Bennett Place Field Trip

Archived Events

Did you know that right here in North Carolina you can visit one of the five official surrender sites of the Civil War? A small farmhouse in Durham, North Carolina called Bennett Place served as the location for the largest troop surrender of the Civil War. As part of their study of North Carolina History, the fourth grade students traveled back in time to the place where Generals William T. Sherman and Joseph E. Johnston met to negotiate surrender terms. Fourth grade students toured the reconstructed farmhouse of James Bennett and caught a glimpse of how the life of this ordinary Southern farmer was forever changed during three days in 1865. On April 26, 1865, General Johnston surrendered almost 90,000 troops, ending the fighting in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
