Sixth and seventh graders participated in this year's competition, which requires students to study various techniques of bridge building, construct a model bridge out of balsa wood, and produce a Powerpoint presentation documenting their work. In this movie, one of their bridges is tested for the amount of load it can support. This particular bridge supported a 25-pound pail of sand before meeting its demise.

The culmination of the project was a trip to Montgomery Community College in Troy, NC, on Feb. 28, for the regional competition. The team was pleasantly surprised by the strength of their entry, as it held the required 20 kg (44 pounds) of load without buckling. That performance, combined with the team's stellar Powerpoint presentation, secured a tie for the runner-up position in the competition.
