Bluebird/Owl Project

Archived Events

In January, 2003, Dr. Mark Stanback of the Biology Department placed 2 pairs of bluebird houses and 2 screech owl houses on the Woodlawn campus. The bluebird houses were located in the open field directly north of the historic home. The owl houses were placed about 10 yards into the forest. Dr. Stanback will be checking the houses with us each spring for signs of nesting. His research concentrates on nest site selection and nest site fidelity among these species.

In early May of 2004, students noticed a nest with five eggs in the lower bird house on the eastern edge of the field. On the 12th of the month, our 2nd graders observed that all the eggs had successfully hatched. Dr. Stanback joined us a week later to show us how he bands the birds and records their vital statistics.

For more information on our joint project, see the 2003 project website authored by Kathryn Tate of Davidson College.
