Houston House Tour | |||

The current owners of the house (Mr. and Mrs. Moore) were very enthusiastic and open with a plethora of knowledge and an array of artifacts from the house and its surroundings. It is a two story log house, clapboard covered, and is believed to have once served as the first post office in the area. The Moores informed students that back in that day, you were taxed on the number of doors your house had, and pink was a fashionable color for a boy's room. Soldiers were brought by train to the house where Hiram Houston, a doctor, would care for them and have them bite on a bullet while he performed surgery under unsanitary conditions. We also visited the Mt. Mourne home that day, a house remarkably similar to Woodlawn that may have been designed by the same architect.
