As part of our monthly visits to places of historical significance, we made a trip to Statesville. Our personal tour guide and notable historian of Statesville, Mack Lackey, brought the past of Statesville to life through his flair for storytelling and the "behind the scenes" tours. We walked through the Fourth Creek Cemetery where soldiers from the Revolutionary War are buried as well as some 40 Confederate soldiers. This cemetery is located next to the 2nd oldest Jewish synagogue in North Carolina, Congregational Emanuel Temple. We examined Ben Long's Fresco "Images at the Crossroad", located at the Civic Center, discussing the symbolism we noted in the painting. We toured the 1860 Classic Revival Sharpe House, home to the longtime mayor of Statesville, and the County Court House, where they just opened a time capsule that was buried 100 years ago. We were all very amazed at the contents of the capsule and decided we would bury our own time capsule this spring on our campus at Woodlawn, to be excavated 100 years from now. We strolled by the Vance Hotel, where Brad Pitt once stayed while on location for filming a movie. The girls were quite excited about this "historical" event. The story was also told of the morning of August 27th, 1891, when the Bostian Bridge on Buffalo Shoals Road became the site of a terrible derailment of a train, one of the most tragic events of its time and the newly wedded couple who for several weeks had thought each had perished in the wreck were once again united. This tour, which was documented in our personal history books, gave us a better understanding of and appreciation for the people and places of Statesville.
