Field trip to UNCC Greenhouse and Gardens

Archived Events

Did you know that the Venus Fly Trap, a carnivorous bog plant, is native to North Carolina? Our students were able to examine them up close at the McMillan Greenhouse Complex and outdoor gardens at the UNCC campus. The beautiful outdoor gardens, made up of wildflowers of the Carolina River Valley, inspired the 3rd and 4th grade students with new ideas for their wildlife habitat gardening project on the Woodlawn campus.

The 5th and 6th grade students were able to experience a dazzling array of exotic plants from tropical and desert environments, demonstrating the diversity of our planet's flora. They are studying the ecosystems of Woodlawn campus and were able to do a comparison of the different flora.

The 7th grade students who are currently studying the human body, were able to make comparisons between plants and animals and were amazed at all the similarities. One student commented that "This was a lot cooler than I had imagined." And after purchasing several Sensitive Mimosa plants (it curls up its leaves when you touch it) we are ready to make over our Woodlawn gardens.
