Woodlawn defeats Hickory Day School 4-3

Athletics

  Soccer

Woodlawn soccer The Trailblazer soccer squad traveled to Hickory Day in late September seeking to bounce back from a tough 1-0 loss at North Hills the previous week. The field conditions were slightly soggy due to the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne, but otherwise it was perfect soccer weather. Woodlawn jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Jenna S. and Matt S. Keeper Charlie C. made a couple of good saves, but Hickory Day answered with a goal late in the first half to narrow the lead to only one goal.

At halftime, Coach Duback encouraged the team to play more aggressively and concentrate on passing to their teammates. However, in the second half, the tide seemed to turn in the home team's favor. Despite strong efforts by sweeper Will M. and center back Curt B., the opponents were able to stay on the offensive a good bit of the time, and they tied the score at 3 goals apiece late in the game. Woodlawn center forward Jenna S. got a breakaway on a beautiful pass from Matt, but was fouled before she could get close to the goal. With only one minute to play, she got another breakaway and drilled a shot into the net for the winning goal. This thrilling game saw much improved play from many players, particularly midfielder Kalie N. The Trailblazers will now be looking for their third win of the season when they host Lincoln Charter on Sept. 30.
