2002-03 Service Learning

winter
coat drive

For our initial community service activity, we worked with Hands On Charlotte in their 9th annual Winter Coat Drive. This took place Oct. 21 - Nov. 8, during which time we helped collect coats for our neighbors that need them. This year 7,184 coats were collected in the Charlotte area.

the Haven

Also in conjunction with Hands On Charlotte, we paid a visit to a new assisted living residence, The Haven in Highland Creek, in October and again in December and April. We're looking forward to more visits in the future.

adopt-a-
highway

We have adopted a portion of Highway 115, just to the west of the school, and have already made a big impact on its litter problem. We also try to ensure that litter doesn't clutter the view of our campus from Presbyterian Road.

adopt-a-
stream

We have also adopted a segment of the Little Sugar Creek, an important tributary of the Catawba River basin. In addition to removing litter, we took some measurements and made observations as part of our science curriculum.

earth day

After studying water quality issues (from business and political as well as environmental points of view), we stenciled storm drains in Davidson.
