Bob brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Woodlawn, having served as Head of School at Heathwood Hall Episcopal (Columbia, SC) for 22 years, and at Charleston (SC) Collegiate School for 6 years. He and his wife Thrace are relocating to the Lake Norman area from Charleston. They have two daughters and five grandchildren.

Beth Helfrich, Head of Upper School

Beth founded Woodlawn's theatre company, the Red Barn Players, and she advises the Woodlawn Activities Committee and Senior Capstone Projects. Beth and her husband live in Davidson with their daughters Zoë '27 and Cora and son Miles.

Before coming to Woodlawn, Jen worked in Atlanta-area independent schools for 20 years, serving as teacher, technology specialist, academic dean, curriculum coordinator, and division head. She currently resides in Charlotte, and enjoys hiking, antiquing, and reading during her free time.

Adah Fitzgerald, Science

In addition to teaching middle and upper school science classes at Woodlawn, Adah teaches the ninth grade service learning course, Environmental Stewardship, where she enjoys exploring her passion for critically analyzing environmental problems and solutions with her students.  Adah and her husband, Bo, live in Mooresville with their two children.

Cathy Denham, Science/Social Studies, Garden Coordinator

Cathy has been the driving force behind transforming our garden plots into a wildlife habitat as well as an outdoor science classroom. Over the past 13 years, Cathy has taught in a variety of local elementary and middle school classrooms, in addition to home schooling. She resides in Davidson with her husband and two children.

Jerod Jones, Math/Science

Jerod has 12 years of teaching experience in elementary/middle schools in South Carolina and at Woodlawn. Being almost 7 feet tall, he is easy to spot around campus - he's also a big basketball fan. Jerod and his wife Shelley reside in Rock Hill with their son, Shepard.

Laine Amortegui, Spanish

In addition to leading our Spanish department, Laine has led ten international trips for Woodlawn students and coordinates a foreign exchange program with students from Guatemala each fall.

Tim Helfrich, English
B.A. in English/Religion from Davidson College

Tim is now pursuing his Masters degree from Middlebury College's Bread Loaf School of English. He has also taught and coached at the Loomis-Chaffee School in Connecticut. In addition to being an accomplished soccer player and runner, he is the current owner/operator of Summit Coffee in Davidson where he has made community outreach a priority. Tim and his wife Beth live in Davidson with their daughters Zoë '27 and Cora and son Miles.

Bryan Stutzman, Math

After 6 years in industry, Bryan entered the education field and has taught classes (primarily math) for the past 10 years in elementary, middle and high schools in Georgia, Mexico, and the Lake Norman area. He resides in Davidson with his two children.

Nyasha Grennan, Kindergarten

Nyasha has taught students from preschool through second grade for 11 years in area Charlotte schools. Her passion is literacy and helping young children develop a love for reading and writing. She and her husband Topher reside in Mooresville with their 3 children.

In her 7 years of teaching, Julie has instructed students from 6th grade math through Calculus. She makes math come alive in her classes with a high-energy environment and interactive lessons.  She and her husband Todd reside in Mooresville with their children Alex '19, Zach '20, and Nick '22.

Donna Early, Music

Donna is currently working toward toward a Masters degree in Counseling from Pittsburg State University. In addition to being the Creative Arts/Worship Director at Journey Church, she has taught private piano, guitar, and voice lessons for over 11  years. Donna and her husband, Brian, reside in Huntersville. They have four children.

Ashley Dashputre, Dance

Tracy Hoskins, 1st Grade

Tracy has completed the AIG (Academically and Intellectually Gifted) Licensure Program at UNC-Charlotte. She has worked for 11 years in area charter schools, primarily as a preK-1st grade teacher, before joining Woodlawn. She has a gift for helping students become independent learners, and also works with children in grades 4-8 to help them become more organized.

Jamie Gunby, Third Grade

Jamie is currently pursuing her Masters degree from Lesley University in Curriculum and Instruction. Before coming to Woodlawn, Jamie taught gifted students in fourth and fifth grade in Indian Trail, NC. In addition to teaching in the United States, she has had experience as an international teacher in both New Zealand and Canada. Jamie and her husband reside in Charlotte.

Marcus Rafiee, Director of Finance

Before coming to Woodlawn, Marcus worked as a consulting actuary at firms in Boston and Charlotte. He has served on the Board of Trustees of his high school alma mater (McCallie School) and the Children's Theater of Charlotte. He lives in Huntersville with his wife, Jill, and two children, Joss '23 and Tessa.

Kendall Evans, Director of Athletics

Kendall has pursued graduate studies in medicine at Wake Forest and biophysics at Howard. He has taught and coached in NC independent schools since 2003. He has two children, Grace '19 and Camryn '21, and a 9-pound Pomchi (Pomeranian-Chihuahua mix).
