Woodlawn Girls Soccer Advances to 1A State Semifinal
#3-seeded Woodlawn School’s girls soccer team knocked off #6 Wayne Country Day School in the quarterfinals of the 1A State Tournament yesterday, winning by a score of 1-0. With the win, Woodlawn advances to the semifinal match where they will face #2 Burlington School in Raleigh, NC on Friday.
Sophomore Lexi Navarro notched the game winner in the 10th minute of the match, her tenth goal of the season and her fourth in post-season play. Senior Rebecca Coutinho hammered a shot from long range that was saved by the Wayne County Day goalkeeper, but Navarro cleaned up the rebound and pushed it past the keeper. Woodlawn held a 12-3 advantage in shots but never managed a second goal.
Senior goalkeeper Elia Ramirez from Woodlawn recorded her third consecutive shutout. Woodlawn has now won ten games in a row, the longest win streak in school history.
“I am very proud of the effort we put forth today against a very physical team on a very hot day,” said Coach Tim Helfrich. “We were a bit unlucky not to get a few more goals, which created some tense moments late in the game. But playing in a tight match when it is a win or go home situation was good experience for our team.”
The semifinals will be played at Trinity Academy in Raleigh, NC at 4:00 on Friday. The finals are scheduled for 11:00 AM on Saturday morning, also at Trinity Academy.

Mar. 30, 2015 - Woodlawn vs. United Faith W 4-1
Woodlawn hosted conference opponent, United Faith, on Monday afternoon. With 6 players sidelined due to injuries and illnesses, Woodlawn was only able to field 9 players for the game - taking on United Faith's best 11. Despite competing with two fewer players on the field and zero substitutes, Woodlawn owned the majority of possession, had more energy, and created the better chances. In the end, the 'Blazers earned an impressive and decisive 4-1 victory, bringing their record on the year to 3-3-1 (3-1-0 in conference play).
After falling down 0-1 in the first half on a defensive miscue, Woodlawn bounced back when Rebecca C. sliced through the United Faith defense before being brought down in front of the goal by the last defender. The play resulted in a penalty kick that Rebecca confidently put in the goal to draw the score even. Woodlawn got the go-ahead goal from senior Hannah G. before halftime. Hannah was seeing her first action of the season, and she was spectacular for all 80 minutes.
The second half was all Woodlawn. Rebecca C. got her second goal of the match, her fifth in the last two games, when she beat the keeper off of a corner kick. The fourth and final goal came from Rachel C. who beat three United Faith defenders before curling in a beautiful shot from long range.
Celeste C. and Rachel N. were superb in their play on the wings, and defenders Mills K. and Taylor S. anchored a great defensive effort. The 'Blazers return to their home field on Tuesday, March 31, for their last action before Spring Break. They take on a tough conference opponent in Carmel Christian at 4:30 PM.
