Woodlawn Welcomes Kevin Coale Assistant Director of Middle School
Please meet the newest member of our team, Kevin Coale. Kevin will serve as Assistant Director of the Middle School working in conjunction with Holly Honeycutt.
We first met Kevin as a candidate for the Athletic Director position. Everyone who met him quickly realized he would be an excellent candidate for many roles at our school. He has fourteen years of experience teaching History, and his special passion is teaching Middle School students. He has served as a Dean of Students, directed International programs, led Capstone curriculums, and created Middle and Upper School Student Leadership curriculums focused on hands-on, student-led, “learning by leading,” experiential approaches to coaching and nurturing the multifaceted elements of leadership that benefit all children.
Kevin’s credentials are excellent. He earned a B.A. in History from the University of Virginia and an M.A. in Independent School Organizational Leadership from Columbia University, where he was a Klingenstein Fellow. Kevin is an outstanding scholar athlete, a three-sport athlete in his prep school days and a member of UVA’s NCAA Division I Men’s Championship Lacrosse team.
As a teacher, coach, school leader and mentor for young people, Kevin will make outstanding contributions teaching Woodlawn’s 7th and 8th grade Social Studies classes, coaching Middle School athletic teams, bringing his passion for developing Student Leadership curriculums and leading Middle School Student Life initiatives.
Kevin writes: “From the moment I set foot on Woodlawn's campus, I felt the horizon-expanding capacity of the people and the place. I am humbled to serve as Assistant Director of Middle School, co-creating value with colleagues and supporting students in a formative, unique, and wonderful chapter of their growth and development. Go Blazers!”
Adding Kevin to our team will bring wonderful new resources to our students, and it will support the excellent contributions Holly makes in her capacity as Director of Lower and Middle School. It will support Holly’s role as School Psychologist, and we know the importance of that K-12 role will continue to grow in the post-COVID era. It will also enable Katie Verlin, K-8 Student Support Specialist, to invest additional resources to student academic support, enhance her role supporting our teachers in Responsive Classroom Training and Middle School PBL planning and coordination. Bringing Kevin to Woodlawn will have a salutary effect on all students, K-12!
Investing new resources in every facet of student success is always a top priority. Attracting and retaining the best faculty and staff, supporting the academic success of our students, enhancing programs that contribute to their social and emotional wellbeing and development, and improving the breadth and depth of the opportunities we offer our students on the playing field, in clubs, activities and electives. All these things are essential to the success of our children, and our school, and Kevin will make excellent contributions to every aspect of the student experience.
